Tsunami in Indonesia, October 2010

On October 25, 2010 a tsunami triggered by an earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, killed more than 300 people. Numerous houses were destroyed by the tsunami flood waves. The earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck 20km (13 miles) below the sea floor close to the Mentawai islands. ZKI provides reference and damage extent maps within the framework of the International Charter Space and Major Disasters. This mapping activity is done in close cooperation with the Indonesian National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN).
